Sondra Oster Baras

Sondra Oster Baras was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio in an Orthodox Jewish home. She was educated at the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, a religious all-day school sponsored by the Cleveland Jewish community. Upon graduation from high school, Sondra studied religious studies at the Jerusalem College for Women in Israel. She completed her B.A. in history and English at Barnard College in New York. She obtained her J.D. at Columbia University’s School of Law.

In 1984, after practicing law in New York for a short time, Sondra moved to Israel. Sondra continued her legal career in Israel, after being accepted to the Israeli bar.

In 1985, the Baras’ joined Neve Aliza, a group of North American Orthodox Jews that were building a new neighborhood in the small Samarian town of Karnei Shomron. Sondra soon became an active member of the governing board of the group and moved into the new neighborhood in 1987. Shortly thereafter, the first Intifada began, and Ms. Baras was drawn into activities advocating for the settlement movement. Since then, Baras has been an active spokesperson for the communities of Judea, Samaria and Gaza.

Baras maintained contact with Christian Friends of Israeli Communities since its inception in 1995, and in 1998, she opened the Israel office of CFOIC in an effort to enhance the organization’s activities in support of the communities of Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Since then, Sondra has been the director of the Israel office, coordinating much of CFOIC’s community support programs world-wide.

CFOIC is the only Christian organization to focus exclusively on the communities in the heartland of Biblical Israel. CFOIC raises funds for the communities and encourages tourism to biblical sites in these areas as well. CFOIC has become a resource in Israel for connecting Christians to the people of Biblical Israel, while working in close cooperation with Christian organizations in the Land and with Jewish organizations interested in linking with Christians from around the world. In addition to the main U.S. and Israel offices, there are CFOIC offices in Germany and Holland and representatives in the UK, South Africa and Bulgaria.

Sondra Oster Baras currently resides in Karnei Shomron, together with her husband Edward, a computer programmer, and their five children.

Background Information

In 1993 and again in 1995, Israel transferred significant territory to the Palestinian Authority, in accordance with the Oslo Accords. Israel entered into this so-called peace process in the hopes that territorial withdrawal would ultimately bring peace and prosperity to an area that has known so much killing and bloodshed.  Many political and religious leaders, however, warned that the withdrawals ran counter to God’s plan for the Jewish nation and would only weaken Israel in future confrontations with her enemies.

Christian Friends of Israeli Communities (CFOIC Heartland) was established in 1995, in response to the Oslo Process, the devastating series of agreements that ceded land to the Arabs in the heart of Biblical Israel. For more than a decade, CFOIC Heartland has stood steadfastly with those Jews who are at greatest risk in Israel—those whose very homes are threatened with destruction, those who face terrorism on a daily basis, those whose core values and daily lives are based on Biblical principles.  Since August 2005, CFOIC Heartland has been the Christian vehicle for support of the refugees from Gush Katif, those Jews who were forced from their homes in the Gaza Strip.

Christians from around the world have stood up for Israel and become valuable friends and supporters of the pioneers of Biblical Israel. Through CFOIC Heartland, churches, ministries, and individuals have visited the communities and linked with them directly through the adopt-a-settlement program. Thousands of Christians have provided financial support for community projects and have made a real difference in the ability of these communities to cope.
