Watch a Preview of THE COVENANT Musical/Drama

The Covenant Story

Welcome to 'The Covenant' the musical that presents the story of the People of Israel from the time of Abraham until today.

Following Israel’s history, from biblical times to the establishment of modern day Israel, you will be introduced to the greatest story ever told, and understand the foundations of the Jewish people of today. The story progresses through many of the eternal characters of the Bible, such as Abraham, Moses, Ruth, David and Daniel, and gives dramatic accounts of recent Jewish history.

Through the descriptions of the persecutions suffered in the worldwide dispersion and the prophesied rebirth of the Jewish people, we see how modern history aligns with the word of the Bible. This is established by the return of the Jewish people to the land of their fathers, the land of Israel.

The musical is written and composed by Elizabeth and Robert Muren from Norway.

Synopsis of Scenes and Musical Numbers

Chapter 1 - The Promise of God to Abraham

The story begins 4000 years ago, with the powerful calling of God to Abraham. He is told to leave his land and family, and go to a land that God will show him. He is promised countless descendants and that through him, the blessings of God will come upon all the families of the earth. God establishes His covenant between Himself, Abraham and his descendants - that He will be their God, and they will be His people.

Chapter 2 - The Hebrews in Egypt

The descendants of Abraham through Isaac, and Jacob, are led to Egypt, and there the nation of the Hebrews is formed under immense suffering and slavery.

Due to the rapid growth of the Hebrew nation under Pharaoh, he sought to destroy all the newborn Hebrew boys. In this dramatic setting, we follow the story of baby Moses and his family and how the Hebrews cried out to their God.

Chapter 3 - In the desert - Joshua and Caleb

As promised, God delivered the Hebrews from the hands of Pharaoh. Moses led the people out of Egypt towards the land of Canaan that God promised Abraham. While in the desert, Moses sent spies into the land, while the Hebrews waited for their return.

Of the twelve spies that return, ten of them were afraid of the mighty Canaanites. Only Joshua and Caleb had faith in God and his promises.

Chapter 4 - In the land of Moab - Naomi and Ruth

After 40 years in the desert, the people of Israel were led into the Promised Land. In the time of the Judges, we follow the story of Ruth from Moab, and how she committed to follow the God of Israel and her Judean mother-in-law back to her hometown, Bethlehem.

Sweet music occurs as the landowner Boaz enters the story. Boaz takes Ruth to be his wife, and they declare their love for each other.

Chapter 5 - In the land of Israel - King David

Some time later, the prophet Samuel visited Jesse, the grandson of Ruth and Boaz. Samuel was called by God to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the king of Israel. All the sons are called forth to show themselves, but Samuel cannot see the future king. David, the youngest son, is called in from the fields, as Samuel hears the voice of God confirming His choice of king.

Chapter 6 - Exile in the land of Babylon

The kingdom of Israel was built up under the leadership of David, but his son Salomon turned away from the Lord and Israel was divided. The northern part, Israel, is first brought into captivity in Assyria, and later the southern kingdom, Judah, is taken captive and brought to Babylon. Among the people taken away were three young men that did not obey the Babylonian king’s command to bow before him in worship. God delivered the young men from the punishment they received - the flaming furnace.

Daniel is seen comforting his people in Babylon after he has read the book of Jeremiah, and seen that after 70 years have passed, the Jewish people will be set free.

Chapter 7 - Under roman rule

After the time of Daniel, several foreign powers ruled the people and the land of Israel. After the Babylonians, the Persians came followed by the Roman Empire. During these times of foreign rule in their own land, the Jews still remembered the covenant of God, and celebrated His feasts. At the Feast of Tabernacles we meet the Jew that may be the most known through all times, Jesus of Nazareth. We experience some of the reactions that his words and teaching created.

In the year 70 CE the Romans totally destroyed Jerusalem and the temple. The Jewish people were scattered to the four corners of the earth, further and further away from their homeland. We meet three families, which in different times and places experienced suffering and persecution because of their Jewishness. The families represent Jews in England 1290, Spain 1492 and Poland 1942.

The Covenant - Impacting Israelis and the Church with the message of God's love

THE COVENANT is an original dramatic presentation recounting the miraculous story of the People of Israel, spanning from the calling of Abraham until the establishment of the modern State. At this critical moment in Israel’s history, it is especially fitting that the International Christian Embassy is able to present this reminder of Israel’s secure destiny, according to the promises found in the Bible.

The exceptional cast and crew is comprised of individuals representing more than twelve nations. Their presence in this production is also a statement of personal solidarity with the people of Israel in their quest for lasting peace in the Land of Promise.

Endorsements - Israelis speak out about The Covenant

'outstanding and encouraging…'

'This gave me hope to continue…' Faculty member of a well-known Yeshiva

'Superb…a very beautiful pageant, brilliantly executed' The Jerusalem English Speaking Theatre

"This must be seen in the secular world of Tel Aviv!" A noted Hebrew University professor

"This was so professional, every Israeli should see it." An Israeli High School principal

The Covenant is presented as a 'tribute' to the perseverance of the Jewish people through the current troubles in the Land.

The Covenant - haBrit

I grew up hating musicals (who knows why?), but I am blessed. I watched The Covenant DVD again last night. I cried again. This production could not happen without God in co-operation with His people. The second time around (actually the third, since I saw the live performance first), I caught only two minor things that were not according to my understanding. The ark of the covenant was never carried without it's covering and the nation of Israel was born at Mt. Sinai, not in the land of Israel. If I'm wrong tell me.

I know many of the people who work for the Covenant. I am awed at their fantastic achievement. The actors do not act. They live their parts. The children are wonderful, bringing so much life. The music and lyrics are superb and full of spirit. The production values create an impact. Beautiful costumes! - and song has never moved me more.

Robert and Elizabeth Muren, creators of The Covenant, have accomplished a dream. You know, I really can't believe they are not native English speakers. They're from Norway! I find it hard to understand how they could have created this musical in perfect English. Not only that, but they are also the lead singers/performers in English AND Hebrew. Yes, they have had The Covenant translated into Hebrew by Israel's greatest lyricist, Ehud Manor. So performances are given in either language depending on the audience.

This production grabs Israelis, from school kids to soldiers to Holocaust survivors, and opens their hearts to their covenant-keeping God - their God - the God of Israel. I wish I had a million dollars to donate to this production. I think watching the DVD is going to be a holiday tradition at our house. Which holiday? Maybe all of them!
