''I Didn't Mean to Sound Anti-Jewish – How and Why Sermons Go Wrong'' By Professor Amy Jill Levine
Despite increasing understanding between Church and Synagogue, anti-Jewish sermons are still being preached by well-meaning priests and pastors who would be horrified to know that they are conveying anti-Jewish message. Why does this unfortunate situation arise? What can be done to prevent it? How might better biblical literacy create good news from Christians and Jews alike?
Seating is Limited and RSVP is required .
About the Author Amy Jill Levine teaches in a predominantly Protestant divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt”. In other words, she is a Jewish professor of New Testament studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Levine’s writings include topics in Second-Temple Judaism, Christian origins, Jewish-Christian relations, and biblical women.
About the Book The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus is a fascinating search for the historical Jesus and an excellent examination of Jewish-Christian relations throughout the millennia. Levine discusses Jesus within the context of Judaism and examines how Christianity evolved from a Jewish sect to a gentile church. She argues that removing Jesus from Judaism does not benefit either Christians or Jews. In The Misunderstood Jew, Levine offers a prescription for healing and mutual understanding between Jews and Christians in a chapter titled "Quo Vadis?" in which she outlines steps for bridging the divide between religions that has caused enormous suffering throughout the centuries.
